Estimating Channel Earnings

YouTube channel revenue scales with total views and RPM — the real-earnings-per-thousand-views figure YouTube Studio reports directly, covering ad revenue, channel memberships, Super Thanks, and other monetization combined. Multiplying the two together gives a projected total revenue figure for planning growth or evaluating channel performance.

RPM is the figure to use for whole-channel earnings estimates — see the dedicated YouTube CPM calculator if you specifically need ad-revenue-per-monetized-playback instead.

YouTube Revenue Formula

Multiply total views by RPM, then divide by 1,000.

YouTube Revenue = (Views × RPM) ÷ 1,000

Worked Example

A channel gets 800,000 views in a month at a $4 RPM.

YouTube Revenue = (800,000 × $4) ÷ 1,000 = $3,200

What Affects YouTube Revenue?

  • Niche and audience value — finance, tech, and business content typically earns a higher RPM than gaming or entertainment.
  • Video length — longer videos (8+ minutes) can include mid-roll ads, often raising RPM compared to shorter videos.
  • Audience geography — viewers in higher-CPM countries like the US lift RPM even at the same view count.
  • Seasonality — RPM typically rises in Q4 as advertiser demand increases, then dips in January.
  • Non-ad monetization — memberships, Super Chat, and Super Thanks all add to RPM beyond ad revenue alone.

YouTube Revenue Calculator FAQ

How do you calculate YouTube revenue?

Multiply total views by RPM (revenue per thousand views), then divide by 1,000: YouTube Revenue = (Views × RPM) ÷ 1,000. Enter your views and RPM above to calculate it instantly.

What's the difference between YouTube RPM and YouTube CPM?

YouTube RPM reflects total channel revenue — ads, memberships, Super Thanks, and more — divided by total views, including unmonetized ones. YouTube CPM reflects only ad revenue divided by monetized playbacks specifically. RPM is always lower than CPM for the same channel, since it spreads revenue across more views and doesn't exclude unmonetized ones.

How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?

It varies enormously by niche, audience geography, video length, and ad format — commonly cited ranges run from roughly $1 to $10+ RPM, but individual channels can fall well outside that range. Use your own channel's YouTube Studio RPM figure for an accurate estimate rather than a general benchmark.

Do Shorts pay the same RPM as long-form videos?

No — Shorts monetize through a separate revenue pool split among creators based on view share, typically producing a much lower RPM than long-form video ads. Calculate Shorts and long-form revenue separately using each format's own RPM for an accurate total.
