What Is CPC?
CPC stands for cost per click — the amount an advertiser pays each time someone clicks their ad. It's the standard pricing model for search ads and a common alternative to CPM for display and social campaigns, since it charges advertisers for traffic delivered rather than impressions served.
Because CPC ties cost directly to an action (a click), it shifts more of the delivery risk onto the publisher or platform compared to CPM, where the advertiser pays regardless of whether anyone clicks.
CPC Formula
Divide total ad spend by the total number of clicks to get CPC.
CPC = Total Cost ÷ Total Clicks
Worked Example
A search campaign spends $750 and generates 300 clicks.
CPC = $750 ÷ 300 = $2.50
The same relationship rearranges to solve for total cost or total clicks, which is what the “Total Ad Spend” and “Total Clicks” modes above do:
Total Cost = CPC × Total Clicks
Total Clicks = Total Cost ÷ CPC

What Affects CPC?
- Keyword or audience competition — more advertisers bidding for the same term or segment pushes CPC higher in auction-based systems.
- Quality Score / ad relevance — platforms like Google Ads reward more relevant, higher-CTR ads with a lower effective CPC.
- Bidding strategy — manual bid caps, target CPA, or target ROAS bidding all influence how much is paid per click.
- Landing page experience — a slow or low-relevance landing page can lower Quality Score and raise CPC on platforms that factor it in.
- Device and placement — mobile, desktop, and specific placements often carry different CPCs for the same keyword or audience.
CPC Calculator FAQ
How is CPC calculated?
CPC is calculated by dividing total ad spend by total clicks: CPC = Total Cost ÷ Total Clicks. Enter your cost and clicks above to calculate it instantly.
What's a good CPC?
There's no universal "good" CPC — it varies hugely by platform, industry, and keyword competitiveness. Compare your CPC against your own account history and industry benchmarks for your specific channel rather than a fixed number.
How do you convert CPC to CPM?
Multiply CPC by your click-through rate (CTR, as a decimal) and by 1,000: CPM = CPC × CTR × 1,000. See the CPM calculator's CPC-to-CPM section for worked examples.
What's the difference between CPC and average CPC?
CPC for a single click and average CPC across a campaign use the same formula — total cost divided by total clicks. "Average CPC" is just the term platforms like Google Ads use for this same figure once a campaign has run for a while.
