What Is CPE?
CPE (cost per engagement) is the amount an advertiser pays for each interaction with an ad — a like, comment, share, save, or click, depending on the platform's definition. It's the standard pricing model for social engagement campaigns, where the goal is interaction and reach rather than clicks to an external site.
Like CPC and CPV, CPE only charges when a genuine interaction happens, shifting more of the delivery risk onto the platform compared to flat CPM pricing.
CPE Formula
Divide total ad spend by the total number of engagements.
CPE = Total Cost ÷ Total Engagements
Worked Example
A social campaign spends $500 and generates 2,500 engagements.
CPE = $500 ÷ 2,500 = $0.20
Rearranged, the formula solves for total cost or total engagements instead, which is what the other two modes above do:
Total Cost = CPE × Total Engagements
Total Engagements = Total Cost ÷ CPE
What Affects CPE?
- Creative quality — more compelling, shareable content naturally earns more engagement per impression.
- Audience fit — well-targeted audiences engage at a higher rate than broad, untargeted reach.
- Platform and placement — engagement norms and costs differ substantially between feed, stories, and other placements.
- Engagement rate — see the engagement rate calculator for the underlying percentage driving this cost.
CPE Calculator FAQ
How is CPE calculated?
CPE is calculated by dividing total ad spend by total engagements: CPE = Total Cost ÷ Total Engagements. Enter your cost and engagement count above to calculate it instantly.
What counts as an "engagement"?
It depends on the platform and ad format — commonly likes, comments, shares, saves, clicks, or video views past a threshold. Social platforms typically define exactly which interactions count toward their own CPE/CPE-bid campaigns in their ad documentation.
What's a good CPE?
CPE varies enormously by platform, format, and audience — compare your CPE against your own account history and platform benchmarks for the specific engagement type you're measuring, rather than a fixed number.
What's the difference between CPE and CPC?
CPC charges specifically for a click. CPE charges for a broader set of interactions that can include likes, shares, comments, and saves in addition to or instead of clicks, making it the more common model for social engagement campaigns rather than traffic-focused ones.
