What Is Conversion Rate?
Conversion rate is the percentage of clicks or visitors that complete a defined goal — a purchase, signup, form submission, or other target action. It's the metric that connects traffic volume to actual business outcomes, and the main lever that turns cheap traffic into expensive or inexpensive customers.
Two campaigns with identical CPC can produce very different CPAs if their conversion rates differ — which is why conversion rate is tracked alongside cost metrics rather than on its own.
Conversion Rate Formula
Divide total conversions by total clicks or visitors, then multiply by 100.
Conversion Rate = (Conversions ÷ Visitors) × 100
Worked Example
A landing page receives 4,000 visitors and generates 120 conversions.
Conversion Rate = (120 ÷ 4,000) × 100 = 3%
Rearranged, the formula solves for conversions or visitors instead, which is what the other two modes above do:
Conversions = Visitors × (Conversion Rate ÷ 100)
Visitors = Conversions ÷ (Conversion Rate ÷ 100)
Once you know conversion rate, plug it into the CPA calculator alongside CPC to see the resulting cost per acquisition.
What Affects Conversion Rate?
- Traffic quality and intent — visitors who already want what's on offer convert at a far higher rate than broad, low-intent traffic.
- Landing page experience — page speed, clarity, and trust signals (reviews, security badges, clear pricing) directly affect how many visitors complete the goal.
- Offer strength — pricing, guarantees, and the perceived value of what's being offered move conversion rate independent of traffic source.
- Friction in the funnel — shorter forms, fewer steps to checkout, and fewer required fields raise completion rate.
- Device experience — a page that works well on mobile typically converts better given how much traffic now arrives on phones.
Conversion Rate Calculator FAQ
How is conversion rate calculated?
Conversion rate is calculated by dividing total conversions by total clicks or visitors, then multiplying by 100: Conversion Rate = (Conversions ÷ Visitors) × 100. Enter your conversions and traffic above to calculate it instantly.
What's a good conversion rate?
Average conversion rate varies widely by industry, traffic source, and what counts as a "conversion" — e-commerce checkout rates and lead-gen form rates aren't comparable. Judge your conversion rate against your own historical data and channel benchmarks rather than a single universal number.
What's the difference between conversion rate and CTR?
CTR measures what share of people who saw an ad clicked it. Conversion rate measures what share of people who clicked (or visited) went on to complete a goal — a purchase, signup, or other target action. Conversion rate happens a step later in the funnel than CTR.
How does conversion rate relate to CPA?
Conversion rate and CPC together determine CPA: a lower conversion rate at the same CPC produces a higher CPA, since more clicks are needed per conversion. Improving conversion rate is one of the most direct ways to lower CPA without changing bids or targeting at all.
